Paddling
The Perquimans River is a paddler's dream. A day can offer a wind so slight that you'll
travel silently on what appears to be black glass. But if you look carefully you'll see the
sandy bottom and watch the fish go by.
Whether you're a novice or an experienced paddler, you'll
find trails to suit your ability. Paddling in Perquimans can be enjoyed year round as long as you
dress accordingly. Some of the waterways may not be marked on maps, so stop by the Town of Hertford
Visitor Center for a local map.
Meandering 30 miles northwest to southeast through the county, the Perquimans River flows into
the Albemarle Sound and has many creeks and tributaries. Many of these are only navigable by
kayaks, canoes or very small motorboats, due to the water depth and the many low bridges that cross
the creeks. The Perquimans is still largely undiscovered, so don't be surprised if you're the
only boat on the water. Enjoy the uninterrupted glimpses of wild life, waterfowl, and cypress
forests hanging with Spanish moss. Wild yellow water lilies along the shore are visited by buzzing
dragonflies and turtles' heads bob beneath the surface as you approach them. Take the time to
delight in some very untouched habitats as you explore the river and its creeks.
Trail maps and descriptions of Perquimans paddle trails are available at www.ncpaddletrails.info/Trail_Maps/Trail_Maps.asp as well as plenty of other usefull information.
